4. Additional Tips for Slovenia Traveling

Packing Essentials

Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for summer, or layer up with warm clothes for winter.

Whatever the season, pack waterproofs, comfortable shoes for walking, and whatever toiletries and personal effects you need.

And don’t leave your travel adapter or portable charger at home. Staying comfortable and prepared for unpredictable weather is essential.

Cash, Local Apps for Payment and Transport

Not everywhere accepts cards, so you should have some cash with you. Plus, downloading apps such as Urbana for public transport and car sharing app Prevoz.org makes getting around, and paying for things in the country, a whole lot easier.

Local Etiquette and Customs

Try to memorize a few basic words of Slovenian, like “Dober dan” (“Good day”) and “Hvala” (“Thank you”). Always smile, and dress modestly when visiting religious sites.

While public transport is for the most part quiet, loud conversations could potentially get you dirty looks. Knowing the local norms is key to showing respect and fitting in.

Transport Options

Buses and trains in Slovenia are reliable, while many tourist spots offer mountain bikes for hire.

The trains are particularly scenic and comfortable for longer journeys, and the public infrastructure is easy to navigate to explore the country.

Renting a Car or Scooter

Hire a car or scooter to reach more remote sites without having to stick to public transport links. For a car, you’ll need an international driving permit, and you must ride scooters with a helmet. Driving offers freedom to explore at your own pace.

Communication: Language Tips

English is fairly widespread in tourist areas, but it won’t hurt to learn a couple of phrases in Slovenian. Basic politeness never goes amiss, and you never know when it might help you out.
